Peek-a-Boo Hair

Decided what color you want your peek-a-boo hair to be. If you are blonde, go with black or pink. If you have dark hair, go with a lighter color like blonde. To use colors like pink on dark hair, you will still need to bleach the under-layer first. Put on latex gloves. Mix up the bleach or hair dye, and set these aside. Comb your hair before dying to untangle it.

Separate the bottom layer of your hair from the top layer, and clip the top portion on top of your head with a large hair clip. Section off 1 inch of hair and brush it to ensure it’s not tangled. If you are preparing dark hair, apply bleach starting at the top of this section near the root, and work your way down to the end. Apply colored hair dye if you’re blonde. Repeat for the entire bottom layer of hair. Dying your hair in chunks will keep you from missing spots. When you are finished, the entire bottom layer will be dyed the color of your choice or bleached.

Wait until your under layer has reach the desired color — a caramel to light blonde if you are dying dark hair, or the desired color for blonde hair. Determine the dye time by reading instructions. Wash out the bleach or hair dye and condition your hair. Blow dry your hair. Unclip the top portion of your hair if the peek-a-boo hair is the desired color. Continue to step four if you are adding a color over the bleached portions.

Mix the desired color hair dye. Again section off 1 inch of hair. Apply the dye starting at the roots and work your way down, covering the entire bleached section. Repeat for the entire bottom layer of your hair. Determine the dye time by reading instructions. Rinse and condition when the time is up. Blow dry your hair. Unclip the top layer and style.

Peek-a-Boo Highlights

Decide on the color you want. Put on rubber gloves. Mix up hair dye or bleach. Avoid adding highlights to the top layer of your hair; you only want the colored to peek through from underneath. Section off a 1- to 2-inch portion of hair with the tail comb for each highlight.

Slide hair foil underneath each section of hair. Paint the hair with the bleach or hair dye with a tinting brush. Fold the sides of the foil towards the center. Fold the bottom of the foil up. Move on to another section of hair. Create highlights throughout your hair, including the under layer of the bangs.

Read the instructions for dye times. Wait until color develops. Remove the foil. Wash out the excess dye or bleach. Blow dry your hair if you have achieved your desired color, and style. Repeat the process in step 2 if you are adding a color to the bleached highlights.

Tips

  • Asking a friend help you with highlights will make it easier.
  • You can use one color or multiple colors for peek-a-boo hair.
  • Apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to the hair you don’t want dyed to protect it.
  • Always use conditioner after coloring or bleaching your hair. The chemicals can make your hair dry and brittle.
  • A tail comb is a comb with a long, thin end that is used to separate hair.
